MUSICA OGGI 2005
ADVANCED COURSES and SEMINARS ON CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

Firenze

The G.A.M.O Association, sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Tuscan Region, organizes the 26th edition of its International Advanced Courses in contemporary music. This year the event will take place from Monday 5th to Sat. 10th of September at the headquarters of the Accademia Musicale di Firenze.
The instrumental classes, mainly featured for flutists and singers, have been especially designed for those musicians who want to further practise their skills in 20th century music. The composition course as well as the analysis seminar will focus on some special features of the 20th century repertoire, taking inspiration from its wide variety.
All classes will take place daily, according to the number of participants.
The selected participants will have the opportunity to take part in the Final Concert which will be performed on 10th September at 9.00 p.m. In addition, the best trainees will be invited to take part in the concert season G.A.M.O. 2006 as performers or composers.

– 3. ALBAN BERG: THE CONCERT FOR VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRA
September 10-11, 2005
11 am to 1 pm; 3 to 6 pm
This year is the 70th anniversary of both Alban Berg's death and the composition of his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. An extraordinary work, it combines serialism and tonality, classical and folk music in a mixture of genres and styles and a proliferation of cross-references that are deeply reminiscent of Mahler, making this Concerto a spiritual legacy of its author and, at the same time, of the whole Viennese musical tradition.
An introduction to the twelve-tone method will precede the analysis of the work, conducted in continual reference to the score and the book the British scholar Anthony Pople entirely devoted to it (Cambridge University Press).
Participants are expected to have a background in basic music theory. Languages of the course: Italian, English, German.
